For Canadian manufacturers, hoping the next round of tariff negotiations will restore business as usual is not a strategy. As noted in our cover story in the September issue, the North American automotive industry has entered a period of sustained uncertainty, and manufacturers need to plan accordingly.
That doesn’t mean abandoning the U.S. market. Far from it. Canada’s automotive industry was built on integration with the United States, and preserving that integrated manufacturing corridor must remain a national priority. But as both the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) and RBC Thought Leadership argue, the industry also needs to become more resilient, more innovative and more valuable within that North American partnership.
For shop owners, the most important takeaway is this: competing on price alone is becoming increasingly risky.
The CAR’s recent white paper on automotive tariffs highlights the immediate pressures already affecting the supply base. Suppliers are absorbing tariff costs to preserve customer relationships, delaying capital investments, reducing research spending and struggling to finance new tooling. The report also warns that policy uncertainty is encouraging companies to prioritize short-term survival over long-term competitiveness.
As a shop owner that should concern you. Deferred investment rarely stays deferred. Eventually, it becomes lost capability. The temptation during periods of uncertainty is to conserve cash and wait for stability to return. But the manufacturers most likely to emerge stronger will be those who continue investing in the technologies and capabilities that customers cannot easily replace.
RBC’s report makes an equally important point. The future value of the automotive industry will increasingly come from advanced manufacturing, engineering, software integration, electronics and sophisticated production systems—not simply assembling more vehicles. Canadian manufacturers have built global reputations for solving difficult production problems, producing complex tooling and delivering precision machining. Those strengths become even more valuable as vehicles become more technologically sophisticated.
